FEATURE: Young Musician’s Project

Previews

WeMakeCulture’s Young Musician’s Project supports (obviously) young musicians (13-19) to develop skills, write and play together, and take the first steps towards gigging, recording, and releasing their music. In this issue, we get to know two acts coming right out of YMP.

CLAUDIA
CLAUDIA is a fiery punk/riot grrrl band hailing from Sunderland, made up of members aged 19–20. Since bursting onto the local music scene just over a year ago, they’ve been turning heads with their raw energy and unapologetic sound. Taking cues from iconic bands like Hole, L7, Babes in Toyland, and Bikini Kill, CLAUDIA creates music that provokes, inspires, and channels pure rage into infectious punk anthems.

Formed through the Young Musicians Project (YMP) in Sunderland, CLAUDIA credits the program with giving them the confidence and opportunity to perform their first gigs, including a memorable show swap in Edinburgh last October. Building on that momentum, the band participated in The Bunker’s Summer Sessions, recording two explosive singles: “Revolt!” and “Dog Food.” These tracks, characterized by guttural vocals, heavy beats, and unrelenting energy, are available now on Spotify and Bandcamp as part of the Summer Sessions album.

While their next gig isn’t until 28 March, sharing the stage with Tearjerker and The Black Rain at The Bunker, CLAUDIA is a must-watch for fans of ‘90s rock and punk. Follow them on Instagram @claudiawinkleband for updates on new gigs, music releases, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of their journey.

Sophie Jackson
Sophie Jackson is a multi-talented musician and assistant music leader at Sunderland’s Young Musicians Project (YMP). At just 20 years old, Sophie is a powerhouse on guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, juggling roles in three different bands. One of these is CLAUDIA, which she helped form during her time as a YMP member. Through the project, she has performed live, participated in recordings, and attended industry events, all while growing as both an artist and leader.

Inspired by acts like The Smiths, The Cure, Paramore, and Faye Webster, Sophie brings a wide-ranging musicality to her projects. Her role as the frontwoman of Blackfern highlights her versatility, and the band is set to release a new track in early February. YMP has played a pivotal role in her journey, offering training in areas like recording techniques and leadership through programs such as peer-to-peer mentoring. These skills have been invaluable as Sophie balances practices, gigs, and music releases across her bands.

Passionate and dedicated, Sophie is a shining example of what young talent can achieve with the right support. Keep an eye on her projects, including CLAUDIA and Blackfern, as she continues to make waves in the local music scene.
