The North-East’s favourite musical business associates came to Sunderland on tour, and if you missed it, you missed out.

Marketplace know how to put on a show, and proved that at their headline gig at Independent Sunderland on 4/7. From the matching outfits, to the tunes, it is obvious that this band is extremely tightly put together and well practiced.

Kicking off the night was local artist Lottie Willis with her full band, performing tracks from her as yet unreleased EP. Lottie delivered a stunning vocal performance, and you’d never know she’d spent the whole day recovering from a lost voice.

This led the way to Club Paradise taking to the stage, with the South Shields band performing crowd favourites ‘Chasing The Summer’, and ‘Years’ from their EP ‘Life on TV’ released in October last year. Can we start a petition for them to release a live EP?

When it was time for Marketplace to get their business meeting started, the crowd was buzzing, the room was packed, and the haze machine was back on in full force. Some audience members were even donning the bands signature ‘shirt and funky tie’ look, with the band giving away a couple of free t-shirts to the best dressed during the set. The five-piece made sure the energy was high and the banter was flowing during their 45 minute stage time, getting the crowd involved throughout, (shoutout to the keyboardist who is the most enthusiastic man I’ve ever seen on keys, you are great!).

The standout tune for me had to be Ode To Monty from their newly released EP ‘Marketplace Mean Business’, but saying that, there wasn’t a bad tune at all through the performance, and it was clear that the longer they performed, the more comfortable they became on the stage, which made it a shame when the gig was over.

Overall, this was a stand-out gig at Independent and Marketplace really do mean business.
