  1. Nano Kino

After releasing new singles earlier this year, as well as their debut album Object A releasing at the start of September, Nano Kino have been all over on the North East gigging circuit. Nano Kino was formed over a decade ago by Sarah Suri (also of Prospect of Power), and Duncan Lloyd (of Maxïmo Park) and over the years, they released a series of now mostly unreleased music. This current era of the band seems the most intentional, with a dreamy, indie-pop sound that showcases the best of each member of the band. If you want to catch these live, you’ve got plenty of opportunities, including a performance at The Cluny on 19th October as part of the Mercury Fringe events across the North East.

  1. Risco

This three-piece from Teesside have been steadily building their profile since 2024 with a string of live shows, festival dates, and six singles along the way. They first came onto our radar back in February with a set at Independent supporting The Last Time for an Independent Venue Week show, and this year alone, the band have played a BBC Introducing showcase, festivals up and down the country, as well as venues such as The Fire Station. Their newest track, Come in for a Ride, which they have been playing at a range of live dates across the summer, released earlier this month alongside a gig at ARC Stockton, showcases their rock and punk influences in their own signature style.

  1. noyou

The Sunderland band have been off the radar for a while, and made a surprising return earlier this year when they dropped two brand new singles without prior announcement. They made further ripples when they announced a live set as part of Independent’s 20th birthday gig in August–and despite having an extensive back catalogue–they only played new tunes (bar one) as part of this set, giving fans a teaser into future plans to make a return with a brand new, heavier sound, and a rejigging of the roles of some members. Recent posts have shown the band in the studio, which hopefully means that the new tunes are well on their way to release. noyou are one of Sunderland’s most beloved bands, so this news will no doubt be a delight to many–including us here at Gan On.

  1. Reverie

Reverie are relatively new on the scene, but the Sunderland boys have already worked their way up to having an impressive live gigging CV. From supporting bands like IST IST, and being on lineups including Aelius Rising, Treevolution Festival, as well as their own headlines, they have built up quite a fanbase within the alternative crowd. So far, they have released two singles that showcase their multi-genre influenced sound, and have gained the attention of various promoters throughout the region. Their next live show is scheduled for 16th October at Independent, supporting fellow Sunderland boys, 24 Hours in Paris alongside punk trio, Trivia.

  1. Moss

Witchy, trippy, ethereal. Three words to describe Teesside’s, Moss. This group does not shy away from the weirder side of things, in fact, they revel in it, and feel at home creating unexpected sounds, with their tracks often clocking in at five plus minutes. Despite being quite lengthy, the tunes are so hypnotic and captivating in a way where the audience doesn’t realise how much time has actually passed since pressing play. Nothing is off the table for these guys, and they successfully experiment with sounds and effects in a way that you can almost visualise the music. It’s no surprise that they have had praise from multiple reviewers across the North East. You can catch Moss live at Cafe Etch in Middlesbrough on 30th October.
